How do you tell if your mushrooms have past their prime?
1. Use your eyes . . . look at your mushrooms. Watch for slime or bruised spots. Those ones are to be thrown in the garbage. Also, look for mushrooms that are shrivelled or withered. These ones should not be used for cooking or eating.
2. Use your nose . . . bring the mushroom up to your nose. They should have an earthy aroma, if not, garbage!
3. Use your fingers . . . feel the mushrooms with your fingers. Their texture should be firm. Garbage any that are mushy or soft.
Make sure you check the ripeness of the mushrooms before you use them in your recipes! Remember to store mushrooms in your refrigerator, usually up to seven days.
